Chickens!

The long awaited for day arrived..I ordered six little chicks (on Feb.22,'12)! Suppose to be shipped out Mar 12 and arrive a few days later. Been so looking forward to one day having some chickens to add to our new little homestead, just for the eggs, fertilizer and enjoyment. Counting down the days till the PO calls to tell me they've arrived!

Just back from the feed store..picked up a few supplies. My fear was that if I waited too long I may not find the all important infrared heat light (I've got the lamp/shield) they'll need to keep warm since it's chick-gettin' time and places may be sold out. So, got the light, a chick feeder, a waterer (I've got glass mason jars to screw into both) and a small bag (for now) of medicated chick starter feed. Just need a thermometer to keep check of the heat in the cardboard box brooder I'll set up along with some wood shavings/aspen type bedding .

My chickens will be one of each; Black Australorp, Dominique, Buff Brahma and Salmon Faverolle, and two Easter Eggers, all females. I may end up with a rooster should I decide somewhere down the line. We've got an 20' x 20' pen that the previous owners built of wood uprights and enclosed in chain link. I want to add a smaller "Fort Knox", super secure fenced run within the pen that they'll have access to from the coop, soon to be built. We have our work cut out for us the next month or so! We've got a raised pen, very secure, that the previous owners raised quail in that will house them outdoors for a while still young should the new coop take longer to build than planned. But I think everything will work out just fine! I can't wait!
